Introduction to a Future Physician

My name is Sydney Warrick and my major is Biology Pre-Med. This summer I was super busy with taking my MCAT (a test you have to take in order to get into medical school), filling out my medical school applications, and volunteering at some local hospitals. My goal is to get accepted into a medical school program this year and then start medical school in fall of 2018, with the end goal of becoming a physician. Even though my summer was filled with studying and deadlines I did manage to find some time for fun. For instance, I live on Skiatook Lake, which is a small town about thirty minutes away from Tulsa. At the lake I enjoy taking the boat out and tubing, wake boarding, and hanging out with friends.

I also enjoy hanging out with my family, which this summer was my brothers last summer before he goes off to college. My brother, Danny, is going to The Kings College in New York City. He’s going to be living in an apartment in Manhattan on Wall Street, which is only a five-minute walk to his school. I’m super excited for him and now that he’s going to school in New York it gives me an excuse to come visit him in New York City more often! Since this summer was the summer right before my brother left for college my mom organized a big family vacation to Charleston, South Carolina where we have a lot of family. We rented a beach house for the week In Charleston and had so much fun. While we where there we toured historical downtown Charleston and went on a dinner cruise, which had amazing seafood. I also got to catch up with my cousins that I haven’t seen in a while and of course waking up on the beach everyday wasn’t to bad either.

  1. What a gorgeous picture of that lake, Sydney! It's like a painting or something... but it's the world itself. Lovely! And I hope you will get good news on your career goals. This class could be a great way to learn about the mythical healers of the Indian tradition, for example... you will see Hanuman flying to the battlefield with his mountain of herbs in the Ramayana, and if you keep an eye out for stories of healers and healing, you will see lots of them. There's even a story about the creature of the god of medicine himself, Dhanvantari ... he sprang from the churning of the cosmic Ocean of Milk. No MCAT required! :-)

  2. Hey congrats on this being your last semester and getting the mcat over with! I am sure that was a big burden off your shoulders. The hard part is done for you and now all you have to do is get in! It sounds like your summer was filled with good times! That trip to Charleston sounds amazing. I haven't really made it out of Oklahoma so anywhere with a beach sounds pretty good i guess haha.

  3. Hey Sydney. Charleston has some of the best seafood places in the U.S., but I might be a little biased, as my family used to live there. Also, good luck with med school, it's hard, but it sounds like you'll be perfectly fine. And good luck to your brother as well, that sounds like quite the place to go to school!

  4. Hi Sydney, is there a particular discipline you want to specialize in, or do you plan on being a general practice physician. Enjoy your time outside that you have this summer, my former roommates in med school tell me all their hobbies went temporarily out the window. Sounds like you get to travel a lot, certainly is exciting and I am definitely jealous

  5. Hi Sydney! You sound like you had a very stressful summer! My summer was definitely the same; my breaks are never actually a break. I hope you did well on your MCAT and I wish you lots of luck on getting into medical school! Where is your dream school? I love the different activities that you can do at the lake. That’s really cool that you’re brothering is studying in New York City. I would love to go there one day.

  6. Hey Sydney! Wow I am so jealous that you live on a lake! I absolutely love the lake, but I only get to go out on the water at friends' houses or at the summer camp I work at. However, when I'm at the camp I'm usually the one driving the boat so I don't get to do any of the fun stuff. I hope you did well on your MCAT and have decided where you're going in the fall!

  7. Hey, Sydney, nice to meet you! The picture of Skiatook Lake is beautiful. I used to work with a guy whose parents live on Skiatook Lake. He would always talk about how much fun it was growing up there. I'm also from the eastern side of the state but a bit farther south. I hope all goes well with medical school. Have a good rest of the semester!

  8. I love Charleston. I only got to visit once, but the city made an impression on me. And there are so many beautiful, swimmable beaches on the Atlantic Coast, in South Carolina! My family is in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon), and while they have plenty of gorgeous beaches with awesome rock formations, the water is FREEZING COLD and completely unswimmable, in this humble southerner's opinion.

  9. Hey Sydney,
Your picture of the lake is gorgeous. How did your MCAT go? I hope you got in so you can start on your journey this fall. Only two weeks of school left this and next, not including finals week. I wish you the best of luck!!

  10. Hi Sydney! I love spending time on the lake. My friend has a lake house on The Lake of the Arbuckle, and we head out there for a long weekend a couple times a year. It's always a lot of fun!

I would love to go to Charleston. I hear it has a great food scene, and I love eating good food.
